More Classic Interior Designs

Those of you who have been following us for quite a while, will remember our previous feature on classic interior designs. There is something about a room decorated in classic style that lets you taste the grandeur of a bygone era… that lets you remember those good old times. The classic never goes out of style.

Kitchens from Scandinavia

Countries of Norway, Denmark and Sweden form the Scandinavian peninsula and the kitchens in this part of the world are known for their emphasis on natural light, clean lines and cool colour palettes. The Scandinavian kitchens strike a balance between tradition and modernity and most of them notably embrace the colour white. Here are a few snaps of Scandinavian kitchens that caught our attention.

Bachelor Pads

Bachelor pads are notoriously stereotyped as messy, poorly taken care of places with clothes carelessly strewn about floors and with refrigerators populated with stale food. These places are portrayed to be occupied with men with a hedonistic approach to life that’s all about having fun and very little to do with life’s mundane chores which often disgusts women related to or involved with them. Okay, if the last part alarmed you a bit, this post is for those men out there who definitely want to make a difference or at least go down trying! ;)

Here are a few tips and images to help you out:
Tips for a Bachelor’s Pad

1. Get it into your subconscious that it is ‘uncool’ to be messy. Having said that it never was a turn-on to anybody, anyway.

2. You probably already own everything you need. Everything just needs to be in the right place and in order.

3. If you make your bed each morning you already are in a very elite minority! Not only will it make your room look clean, but it will help you develop skill sets that will be noticed elsewhere. (Hint! Hint!)

4. Have a process for everything. The last time we checked they were not yet smart enough to invent clothes that washed, organized or ironed themselves. So YOU need to take care of the laundry logistics.

5. Take pride in being known as someone prepared for anything. Keep an overnight kit for guests such as packaged toothbrush and extra towels. You never know when this might come in handy.

6. Now for some designer touches for those willing to spend a bit for the look:

i. Framed black and white prints on your walls.
ii. Big sofa, big TV, speakers (Entertainments spaces generally have high priority)
iii. Games, gym items and gadgets!

More Themed Hotel Rooms

Sometimes, hotels can provide excellent inspiration for home. If you remember, we had previously featured an interesting hotel having some bizarre themes. Here is something more for you. These shots are from Fox Hotel, Copenhagen. 21 international artists from the fields of graphic design, urban art and illustration turned Hotel Fox to a piece of art with unique individual themes for its 61 rooms.

French Country Kitchens

French country kitchens have an amusing characteristic. Their style of design enables them to fit into rural farmhouses or the grandest of chateaus. In short they sync well into any house.

Most French kitchens, like the Italian ones do consider the chopping table as a centre piece for the kitchen. In this post, we feature some inspirational French Country Kitchens from one of France’s best kitchen makers: Mobalpa

Traditional Italian Kitchens

If you think we have an obsession for Italian made kitchens, you could be forgiven one of these days. For this is our third feature on the Italian style of kitchen making. We have already done the Tuscan and the Modern. So what is left now? The traditional…

Kitchen designs are from European Cabinets

Tuscan Style Kitchens

Tuscany is a region in Italy and the kitchens there are famous for the rustic mood they bring. Tuscan style kitchens sport characteristic warm earth tones along with natural materials to produce a worn out look. Although the appearance it produces is that of a century old kitchen, one can achieve it without buying expensive antique piece.

sive antique pieces.

So what gives the Tuscan look?

Color

The colours chosen include those that prominent in the Tuscan landscape itself. Think earthly shades of orange, yellow, red and green. Golden yellow, Burnt Orange, Burgundy should work out.

Texture

Use natural materials as far as possible. Stone, slate, granite, marble, limestone or terra cotta would help for flooring. Mosaics and coloured tiles work as well for flooring or table tops. Walls should be roughly plastered. You could try out textured suede effect paint or add a bit of builder’s sand to normal paint just to create a rough look.

Lighting

Again, think old style when you choose the lighting. Chandeliers and pendant lighting and even recessed lighting are okay but nothing too shiny or modern.

Furniture

Furniture you choose should be rustic and old fashioned. Chunky wood furniture, with a distressed finish is desirable.

Here is a quick tip on how to create that distressed wood finish: Apply a little wax on places that would appear to wear naturally like corners and edges. Now when you paint, it won’t adhere at those places where you rubbed wax. Keep the piece for drying and then sandpaper those areas where you would want to create the distressed effect.

If you plan to buy rustic furniture be sure to check out the local flea markets first. They may have some good deals.

In general, pine or oak with neat, simple, uncomplicated lines would help accentuate the Tuscan look.

Decoration

Murals, Metal urns, terracotta planters, decorative bottles and jars, filled with speciality oils all help give an authentic look. It is also common for herbs and spices to be displayed in ceramic or stone jars on top of racks and shelves. Wrought Iron scroll wall grilles are also often used to add to the decor. Grape vines positioned over doorways or around cupboards are iconic of Tuscan kitchens.
