Roller Coaster Apartments Project in Beihai China

Seeing these pictures made me think of a roller coaster and how the drops, twists and turns catapult the car on a track. This however, is a development project for apartments in Beihai, China. The project is being undertaken by Mad Architects, a Chinese architecture firm in Beijeng. Upon completion, this will certainly become a landmark for the city.

Contemporary Floating Home in Seattle

From Vandeventer + Carlander Architects comes a modern home design located on Lake Union, right in the city center. How fascinating it is to have a house on a lake! It would be interesting to know what the address of this home is. You probably did not see this coming, but there are a lot of similar floating houses on Lake Union. In fact, if I recall correctly, Tom Hanks owned one in the movie “Sleepless in Seattle”. This particular project was meant as a contemporary looking building with plenty of entertainment space. As you can see in the pictures below, there are many decks and the large floor to ceiling windows allow great views of the city in every direction. This is not exactly the most intimate crib, but it’s okay, as long as the owners don’t mind.

Small Apartment but Flexible by Setmund Leung

Designer Setmund Leung presents an apartment that features sliding panels on rails that you can use to partition the space to your preference. These small but flexible apartments provide practical living dimensions that cater to all their needs. The different rooms are divided and hidden behind sliding doors set on a track. This mobile system allows you to close off any rooms not in use so the main space stays open. The same track also allows you to move the rooms around. The only rooms that have to stay put are the kitchen and bathroom for plumbing reasons.

Tetris Apartments

Tetris Apartments is an innovative project completed by slovenian architects Ofis in Ljubljana. As you can see from these pictures these apartments are inspired by the well known game named Tetris. The building stands on the edge of the 650 apartments development which was finished year ago. By urban rules the block is 3 floors high and 65 meters long. Since the orientation of the apartments is towards the car road the apartment areas together with balconies are orientated to the quieter south side.

Strange Japanese Apartment – Fudamae

The Fudamae Apartment is designed by ISSHO Architects an architectural design office based in Tokyo and they got my attention with this apartment window’s design that has an unusual shape. The Fudomae apartment’s design makes the most of a limited volume while creating a comfortable urban living space . Each 18 sqm unit fits a living room, kitchen, bathroom and storage. The tight arrangement is transformed into a design expression, particularly through the location and shape of the window, which designates the placement of the bed and other furniture. The window’s angle and height corresponds to both the interior of the room and the scenery outside, linking the Japanese single lifestyle and the natural environment.

A Chapel Converted Into a Modern Apartment

The decline in church attendance over the last several decades has meant that countless churches across the Netherlands have lost their function. They are crumbling, are demolished, or are put to new uses. Their specific architectural features often fall by the wayside in this process. Not every church can be turned into a municipal exhibition hall, and if, for example, a residential use is chosen, the original spatial qualities are usually lost. A dutch firm named Zecc has converted an old chapel into an apartment, carefully respecting and enhancing the character of the original building. The chapel was part of a large housing complex of the Friars of Utrecht, which at its height, around the mid-20th century, housed 217 residents. The remaining 13 elderly friars, however, moved to a nursing home in 2005, and the complex was divided up and converted into about 40 apartments.

Beautiful Small Apartment Design

Queeste Architecten designed a beautiful 30 square metre apartment, that includes a kitchen, bathroom, toilet, and living and sleeping space. I know that 30 square metre is a very small apartment, but look at these pictures, because they managed to do a great job with this limited space. Here are a few words from Queeste Architecten about this project :

Maff Apartment is a “bed & breakfast” located on the third floor in the attic of a private house in The Hague. The client and owner lives in the same building. A communal staircase provides access to the apartment, which functions autonomously from the rest of the building. The limited floor space of 30m² has been equipped with the following functions: a sleeping accommodation for 2 people a dining area for up to 4 people a kitchen a toilet a bathroom with shower an installations area various storage facilities. The goal of the design was to create a living environment that would be spacious despite the small volume, providing all the comforts belonging to luxurious contemporary lodging. In addition, Maff Apartment was to have a clear and strong identity to provide a sense of uniqueness for its users. – Via – Dezeen

Add an Additional Room To Your Apartment

Located between art and architecture, the backpack house is a walk-in sculpture with their own spatial quality: a floating, lighted room, as a temporary scaffolding and a “minimal sculpture” also appears. Universally used as a mini-backpack, this house adds extra space at the front of each residential building attached. The design consists of a welded steel cabin, using steel cables on the roof or on the facade of the existing house is attached. The sculpture consists of a cube-made element with the dimensions width 2.50 m, 2.50 m in height and 3.60 m deep. The height of the top floor of the cube element is approximately 10.50 m, and the total weight of the sculpture is approximately 2.0 t. In conclusion if you want an extra room for your apartment this might be a great idea to take in consideration.

Ideas for Small Apartments from Compact Living

In the last month I’ve got a few emails from people asking me if I can find and post a few things and ideas for small apartments. I’ve searched a little and I’ve found Compact Living, a company that designs prefabricated easy-to-install lofts for just about any space. Just contact them with the dimensions of your space and they produce a custom loft for you. There are multiple options from sleeping lofts to larger extended living lofts. The ideas presented in this post are for very very small apartments. As you can see in these small places the only way to earn some additional space is to have a suspended bed. Personally I like the final results of these small apartments, but I don’t think that I would like to live in a space so small.

Great Idea for a House with High Ceilings

Take a look at the pictures from this post …I’ve found them today on Apartment Therapy and I think that this suspended library is a great idea for a house with high ceilings. That empty space is now a beautiful library, that also saves space on the ground, accessible by ladder, high up enough so that it doesn’t loom.
