Icsid (the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) announced November 25 that the designation was conferred to Helsinki because of the city’s design initiatives’ positive impact on everyday life. Helsinki has won the title of World Design Capital for 2012. The honour was bestowed on Wednesday at the World Design Congress in Singapore. Helsinki beat out the Dutch city of Eindhoven for the title. Helsinki will be the third World Design Capital, following Turin (Torino, 2008) and Seoul (2010). The biennial designation is given to one city at a time.
